Bloomsburg chapter raising funds for scholarship honoring the memory of Brother Greg Anstine
When Greg Anstine joined Pi Lambda Phi, he was described by his brothers as a “shy” and “not your typical frat guy,” but he found a group of brothers who really helped him come out of his shell. His classmate, Wayne Decaria said he was well-liked and always “in bright spirits. He was a smart, stand up guy who made friends easily.”
In his sophomore year, Greg died in a tragic accident in 2022. For most of his brothers it was the first time they experienced the loss of someone close to them and it was a real shock to the system. They faced it with mutual support, resilience, and a determination to honor his memory.
Establishing the Greg Anstine Scholarship
As brothers dealt with their grief, they knew they wanted to do something to make sure Greg was remembered. Shane O’Rourke was taking a class on random acts of kindness and came up with the idea of creating a scholarship fund that would provide an annual gift to a Bloomsburg student in Greg’s name.
The brotherhood embraced the idea as Greg was a study-focused business administration major who made the Dean’s List three times during his college studies.
Within a month of Greg’s passing, the chapter worked with the Bloomsburg College of Business to set up an endowed scholarship, “that will benefit future Huskies and leave a legacy that Greg would be proud of.”
Focusing their efforts on fundraising
The university set a fundraising goal of $25,000 in four years for an endowed fund. Faced with filling the coffer with cash, the chapter began planning their campaign with a series of events and fundraisers, partnering with local businesses and fellow Greeks.
The brothers quickly realized realized that the best way to a student’s heart is through their stomach, and found willing partners in local eateries like Fourth Taco and Steph’s Subs. They also found support from sororities Phi Iota Chi and Zeta Chi. They held events dishing tacos, grilled cheese, and doughnuts… all the things a growing coed needs for sustenance.
They held a well attended “Pie a Professor” event that received local news coverage from several stations.
And at the end of each year they hold a clothing auction of Pilam gear to hand down their prized possessions to the next generation.
Through these efforts and with some individual donations, the chapter impressively raised over $20,000, but they are still short of their goal to endow the fund.
Help the chapter reach their goal!
You can help push the Bloomsburg chapter over the top to endow the Greg Anstine Scholarship by making a donation to the Zeigler College of Business dedicated fund. Please help the chapter honor the memory of an admired brother and ensure that Greg Anstine is remembered through a scholarship benefitting future generations.
The Educational Foundation can offer chapters and alumni organizations support to help set up similar funds that are dedicated to scholarships or other educational needs of your chapter. Contact the Foundation for more info.
